One man was killed and another critically injured this morning when their vehicle crashed into a pole early Sunday morning during a suspected car-to-car shooting in an unincorporated area near Whittier, a sheriff’s deputy said.
A passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, which was reported shortly after 1 a.m at the intersection of Broadway and Reichling Lane. The driver, who had tried to get help, was found outside the vehicle and was transported to a hospital, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

“Detectives have learned that Pico Station deputies responded to the area regarding a ‘rescue’ and ‘shots heard’ call,” Navarro-Suarez said. “Upon arrival, they discovered that a traffic collision had occurred wherein the victim’s vehicle had collided with a pole. Upon closer inspection, the deputies saw that the right front passenger was suffering from gunshot wounds. A short distance away, deputies located a second victim, the driver of the vehicle, near a residence. The victim had sought help and was also suffering from gunshot wounds.”
Investigators believe the victims’ vehicle was eastbound on Reichling lane approaching Broadway when they were shot by a suspect or suspects in another vehicle that fled the scene in an unknown direction, Navarro-Suarez said.
The two victims were the crashed vehicle’s only occupants.
