The shooting took place in the 1200 block of Atwood Place about 7:45 p.m. Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. Omar Gonzalez, 36 of Los Angeles died at a hospital, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

The incident began a few minutes earlier, when officers chased a vehicle that was reported to have been stolen to Atwood Place, where it stopped, said LAPD Officer Tony Im.

According to police, Gonzalez was a passenger in the vehicle, and he got out and ran. The female driver was taken into custody. A short time later, Gonzalez, who was armed with a gun, was shot by police, said Officer Drake Madison. No officers were injured.

The OIS was being investigated by the LAPD’s Use of Force Division, the Justice System Integrity Division of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the LAPD Inspector General’s office.
