A tow truck driver suffered major burns to his hands and arms early Sunday when a suspected drunken driver crashed a pickup truck into his rig, causing it to burst into flames.

About 12:05 a.m., tow truck driver Kim Rucker was northbound on 90th Street East north of Avenue O in Palmdale. As he made a U-turn, a Ford F-350 traveling south crashed into the right side of the tow truck, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Savage.

The tow truck burst into flames and was fully engulfed by the time authorities arrived on scene, Savage said.

Rucker was able to escape prior to the tow truck becoming fully engulfed, but suffered multiple third degree burns on his hands and arms and was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, Savage said.

The driver of the Ford, Candido Tostado, 59, of Palmdale, suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and booked at the Lancaster Sheriff station, Savage said.

90th Street East was closed for about two and a half hours, Savage said.
