One or two people were killed when a speeding vehicle hit a wall and burst into flames in the Exposition Park area Saturday, according to Los Angeles police officers.
The intensity of the blaze was so great that officers were unsure how many victims were in the wreckage.
The crash took place at the intersection of 39th and Flower streets, just east of the Harbor (110) Freeway, at 2:30 a.m., a desk officer at LAPD’s South Traffic Division told City News Service.
“One vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed slammed into a wall and burst into flames,” the desk officer said. “One person was confirmed dead. But the vehicle was so badly burned there could be a second person inside.”
It’s unknown at this point if drugs or alcohol were involved.
The 39th Street offramp was shut down by the California Highway Patrol and a SigAlert was declared at 3:50 a.m. The offramp was reopened around 5:40 a.m.
The fatal collision was being investigated by LAPD’s South Traffic Division. Anyone with information on this crash was asked to call (323) 421-2540.
