Authorities Monday tried to figure out why a 49-year-old man shot and killed his mother before taking his own life at the home they shared in San Gabriel.
The man was identified Monday as Raymond Cheng, 49, said coroner’s Chief Brian Elias. The name of the woman, in her 70s, was withheld, pending family notification.
Deputies responded at 10:06 p.m. Saturday to reports of shots fired at an apartment in the 1300 block of Stevens Avenue, said Kimberly Alexander of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
They found that the man had shot his mother, and then killed himself. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, Alexander said.
Sheriff’s investigators are assisting the San Gabriel Police Department with the investigation.
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
