A man who was pulled from the water off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes Sunday by his friend and then given CPR by citizens and sheriff’s deputies died despite all the efforts to save him.

The drama unfolded about 11:50 a.m. when deputies from the sheriff’s Lomita station received a 911 call about a swimmer in distress along the coast near Hawthorne Boulevard and Calle Entradero.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene, according to the department. Deputies found the man in distress had been pulled from the water by his friend and CPR had already been started.

Deputies and county firefighters took over the CPR until a L.A. County Fire Department helicopter could take the injured man to a hospital. However, the man later died at the hospital, the sheriff’s department said.

The victim’s name was withheld notification of kin.

Anyone with information about this swimmer was asked to call the sheriff’s Lomita station at (310) 539-1661 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS. All tips can be made anonymously.
