A sheriff’s arson/explosives unit was called to a business Saturday in Whittier after a suspicious package was found but the package was later determined to be a fake bomb.

The phony bomb was found about 10:30 a.m. in front of a business located in the 7600 block of Greenleaf Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities evacuated the building where the package was found and temporarily closed down surrounding streets, the department reported.

The package was described as a “pipe with wires sticking out.” The arson/explosives unit then used a robot to examine the package and determined it to be safe.

The area and building were cleared for return by 1:20 p.m., according to the department.

Anyone with information about this fake bomb was asked to call the sheriff’s department at (323) 881-7500. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS. All tips can be made anonymously.
