Three deputies working the graveyard shift in South El Monte walked in on an armed robbery in progress at a local store and arrested the suspect, who was armed with a short-barreled shotgun, a sheriff’s deputy said Saturday.
The deputies walked into a store near the 9800 block of Rush Street around 1:30 a.m. Friday, where they saw the suspect arguing with the store clerk, and the clerk then putting his hands in the air, said Deputy Joana Warren of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
The deputies recognized the suspect, who matched the description of a prior armed robbery, which occurred about midnight a short distance away, she said.
“Deputies also saw the butt end of a firearm protruding from a bag the suspect was holding,” she said. “They detained him at gunpoint and ordered him to the ground.”
The suspect was later identified as Geovanny Sandoval, 27, who was arrested on suspicion of robbery, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of a short-barreled shotgun. He was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Detectives from the sheriff’s Temple station asked anyone with information about the robbery to call them at (626) 285-7171.
