The Los Angeles Police Department plans a specialized motorcycle safety enforcement operation Sunday in the Foothill area aimed at lowering motorcycle-related deaths and injuries, authorities said Saturday.

The operation will occur between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., police said.

Additional officers will patrol areas frequented by motorcycles and where motorcycle collisions occur, police said. They will be looking for traffic violations committed by motorcyclists and automobile drivers that contribute to motorcycle crashes.

Motorcycle fatalities in California increased 28 percent from 2010, when there were 352, to 453 deaths in 2013, which was a five-year high, police said. In the past five years, there were 150 motorcycle-related fatalities and 3,615 injuries in the city of Los Angeles.

Safe riding techniques include using lane position to increase visibility, changing lanes only with ample room, matching speed to surrounding traffic, wearing a DOT-compliant helmet and brightly colored protective clothing and riding with lights on during daylight hours, police said.
