A man is facing possible criminal charges after being found in possession of two packages that were stolen from the front porch of a home in Burbank, police reported Tuesday.
Daronne Davis, a 33-year-old transient, was arrested about 6:30 p.m. last Thursday after officers went to the 4200 block of Woodland Avenue on a report of “a suspicious male who appeared to be casing the area and was possibly trying to break into vehicles,” Burbank police Sgt. Derek Green said.
“Davis was in possession of a backpack, which he allowed police officers to search,” the sergeant said. “Inside the backpack, officers found two packages addressed to a resident living in the 4400 block of Woodland Avenue. Davis admitted to officers that he stole the packages about fifteen minutes earlier.”
The resident verified to police that the packages had been stolen from the home’s front porch, Green said.
Davis was booked on suspicion of possession of stolen property, and was released pending a Jan. 8 court date.
“The holiday season means an increase in package deliveries,” Green said. “It is not uncommon for packages to be delivered late in the evening, during darkness. The Burbank Police Department would like to remind the public to take steps in preventing porch package thefts.”
Among the security tips:
— if you’re expecting a package, try to be home to accept it or make arrangements to have it delivered at a time when someone is home;
— make sure you set up email or text alerts upon delivery and consider having someone you trust accept the package on your behalf if you are unable to;
— take steps to require a signature for packages, especially those that contain valuable items; and
— if you routinely have packages delivered when you aren’t home, explore options for delivery lockers or postal mail boxes.
