A man allegedly armed with a pistol was shot during a confrontation with sheriff’s deputies in Perris and remained hospitalized Monday in critical condition, a sergeant said Monday.

The sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit is investigating the deputy- involved shooting, which occurred about 10:30 p.m. Sunday outside of the Perris Town Square shopping center on Nuevo Road.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Willison, deputies were sent to the location to investigate reports of a man with a gun. Moments later, the suspect was confronted and confirmed to be in possession of a handgun, he said.

As deputies engaged the man, shots were fired, and he was seriously wounded, according to the sergeant. No deputies were injured.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley.

The deputies involved, none of whom were identified, were placed on paid administrative leave, per departmental policy, pending the outcome of the investigation, according to Willison.
