An ex-con accused of stealing from more than a dozen convenience stores and robbing at least two in Moreno Valley was charged Monday with 13 counts of theft and two counts of armed robbery.

Leonard George Maree, 44, of Moreno Valley, was arrested Thursday following a two-month investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Along with the theft and robbery counts, Maree was charged with sentence-enhancing allegations of using a firearm in the commission of a felony and committing a crime within five years of parole from state prison.

He’s being held in lieu of $145,000 bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside and is slated to make his initial court appearance Monday afternoon at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Jeremy Harding, detectives began investigating the crime series at the start of the year. Harding said investigators tied the convicted felon to 14 commercial burglaries and two robberies, all involving convenience stores.

The sergeant did not specify what evidence was uncovered during the investigation.

Maree was tracked down to an apartment in the 13000 block of Chagall Court, where he was taken into custody without a struggle.

According to court records, the defendant has prior convictions for fraud, grand theft and transportation of marijuana for sale.
