A former office secretary for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers who embezzled about $34,000 from the Wilmington local is expected to receive a probationary sentence Monday.

Maria Nunez, 51, of Los Angeles, pleaded guilty in January to a misdemeanor count of making a false entry in union records, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Federal prosecutors are recommending a two-year probationary sentence that includes six months of home detention. The defense is asking that the judge impose only probation.

According to her plea agreement, Nunez admitted stealing about $34,000 from IAMAW between January 2012 and March 2013 while working at a job that entailed collecting dues and maintaining records.

Prosecutors wrote that Nunez used the job to “defraud, embezzle and steal” from the union. She has already repaid all but about $4,800 of the money she stole, court records show.
