Criminal charges were filed Tuesday against a 20-year-old man who allegedly shot at a Pomona police SWAT team in Azusa last week.
Jorge Galvez was ordered to be held in lieu of $6.2 million bail while awaiting arraignment June 6 on six counts each of attempted murder of a peace officer and assault with a firearm upon a peace officer, according to Greg Risling of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The Pomona SWAT team was assisting Azusa police officers serving warrants in a gang investigation at a residence near the 5500 block of Lark Ellen Avenue about 4 a.m. last Thursday when the officers came under fire “from inside the house, while our officers were outside,” according to a statement released by the Pomona Police Department. “Our officers then returned fire.”
No one was hurt in the exchange of gunfire.
Galvez was arrested at the scene, according to sheriff’s Deputy Trina Schrader.
The search warrant at the Azusa location was one of eight gang-related warrants being served simultaneously, and Pomona police were asked to assist by serving the warrant, according to Pomona police.
According to Azusa police Lt. Chris Grant, the multi-agency operation included personnel from the Azusa, Pomona, Covina and Baldwin Park police departments, along with members of the sheriff’s department and the U.S. Marshals Service.
A number of people were arrested on suspicion of various violations, Grant said.
