A crash in Anaheim involving an Orange County Sheriff’s Department squad car and another vehicle sent two deputies and two women to a hospital, authorities said Thursday.
The two deputies were treated and released, said Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. The status of the two women was not immediately known, Braun said.
All four sustained minor injuries, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Daron Wyatt.
The deputies were responding to a reported carjacking in Stanton about 11:35 p.m. Wednesday when their patrol vehicle was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Orange and Western Avenues in Anaheim, Braun said.
The deputies were westbound on Orange looking for the stolen dark green Toyota Avalon before the crash, Braun said. The squad car collided with a 2001 Buick that was southbound on Western at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday.
The deputies did not have lights and sirens on as they were searching for the stolen car, Braun said. Anaheim police are investigating who was at fault in the crash.
Anaheim later police picked up a “Lojack hit” on the stolen Toyota at 1:13 a.m. When an officer tried to pull the car over, the driver turned into a residential area and slammed into a tree on Chanticleer Road near Brookhurst Street, according to Braun and Wyatt.
The driver was taken into custody, but another suspect in the carjacking was still at large, Braun said.
The original carjacking occurred in the 8000 block of Cerritos Avenue, Braun said. Two men, with one wielding a knife, demanded the keys from the driver, who turned them over, Braun said.
