A 26-year-old man was charged Tuesday with killing a transient who was found dead last week on a bench outside a Santa Monica hospital.

Daniel Roy Davis is scheduled to be arraigned July 24 in a Los Angeles courtroom in connection with Friday’s killing of Justin Patrick Lee, 41.

The murder charge includes an allegation that Davis personally used a knife in the commission of the crime.

Lee’s body was found about 6:45 a.m. last Friday on the grounds of Providence St. John’s Health Center, at 2121 Santa Monica Blvd., by hospital staff, who called police, according to Santa Monica police Lt. Saul Rodriguez.

Police said at the time that the victim had suffered a blunt force injury to his upper body. Autopsy results are pending.

“As detectives were canvassing the area, they located Davis in the immediate area of the 2300 block of Santa Monica Boulevard,” Rodriguez said. “Detectives gathered evidence linking Davis to the crime.”

Davis — who was arrested that day by Santa Monica police — remains jailed in lieu of $2 million bail.
