A routine traffic stop in Pomona resulted in the arrest of a man on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a gun and ammunition, authorities said Saturday.

At 11:45 p.m. Friday, members of the Pomona Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force noticed a black Chevy Suburban with an equipment violation in the 1600 block of Gillette Road and pulled the driver over as he entered the westbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway, according to Sgt. M. Lange with the Pomona Police Department.

The driver, identified as Timothy Barnes, 29, of Covina, informed officers he was on probation for drug sales, Lange said.

When officers asked Barnes to step out of the vehicle, they noticed a concealed dagger in his waistband and detained him for possession of an illegal weapon, he said.

Officers searched Barnes’ vehicle and discovered a semi-automatic handgun with a silencer and a 12 gauge shotgun, both of which he admitted were his, Lange said.

Barnes was booked at the Pomona City Jail.
