A head-on crash claimed the life of 36-year-old reporter Sean Belk, his newspaper’s publisher announced Saturday.

Belk was involved in a collision at Broadway Street and Obispo Avenue at about 8:30 Friday night, about one block from his apartment. He was taken to Memorial Medical Center but did not survive the severe injuries he sustained, according to Long Beach police.

Belk wrote for the bi-weekly Beachcomber newspaper since 2016, and before that for the Long Beach Business Journal and the Signal-Tribune newspaper in Signal Hill, Beachcomber publisher Jay Beeler said Saturday.

“Sean Belk was a master of his craft and will be greatly missed by all of us on the Beachcomber team,” said Beeler, who added that Belk received his AA degree from Long Beach City College in 2005, followed by a BA in communications from Cal State Fullerton in 2009.

Beeler said that at the time of his death, Belk he was working on a story about the former Boeing C-17 assembly facility for the paper’s Jan. 18 edition.

Police said the driver of the second vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
