Coroner’s officials Sunday released the name of a passenger who was killed in a crash Saturday that also killed a motorist when he slammed his sedan into a tree along Santiago Canyon Road.
The second fatal victim in the crash was identified as Colton Mondy of Garden Grove, 17, according to the Orange County coroner’s office.
The driver, 19-year-old Joshua Morales of Santa Ana, died at the scene, Supervising Deputy Orange County Coroner Kelly Estrada said. An autopsy was pending.
Morales’ four passengers had suffered critical injuries, the California Highway Patrol said. Paramedics rushed Mondy to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, where he later died from his injuries at 6:48 a.m. Saturday, according to the coroner’s office.
The crash happened around 2:25 a.m. Saturday in the area of Santiago Canyon and Haul Hicks roads, a CHP dispatcher said.
The Mazda Protege sedan was going north on Santiago Canyon Road at an unknown speed when Morales allowed the sedan to leave the roadway and it crashed through a barbed wire fence into a tree, she said.
Two of his passengers were taken to Mission Regional Hospital. Mondy and another passenger were taken to UC Irvine Medical Center, she said.
The other passengers were identified by the CHP as Garden Grove residents Luis Hernandez, 19, and Unique Valdez, 18, and Daniel Clark, 18, of Santa Ana, the Orange County Register reported.
