Santa Monica firefighters were assisted by firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department in extinguishing a fire Sunday at a Santa Monica hotel that injured a person, authorities said.
The blaze that burned part of Huntley Hotel, at 1111 2nd St., started about 12:10 a.m. in several large trash bins that caught fire behind the hotel, said Santa Monica fire Capt. Patrick Nulty.
The fires spread, burning the exterior of the second-, third- and fourth-floor units of the hotel, he said.
Forty Santa Monica firefighters, with help from L.A. firefighters, attacked the blaze from both the exterior and interior of the building.
Santa Monica police evacuated dozens of hotel guests to safety, Nulty said.
The flames were extinguished in about 30 minutes. Most of the fire damage was to the building’s exterior and some upper balconies. A sprinkler system also aided in the battle, but caused substantial water damage to four floors.
A person was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital in good condition, Nulty said. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by SMFD’s arson task force, he said.
