A former chiropractor who was on the lam for four years was sentenced Tuesday to two and a half years in federal prison for his part in a Medicare fraud scheme.
David Y. Kim, 57, of Los Angeles, was also ordered to pay $690,519 in restitution by U.S. District Judge David O. Carter.
Kim pleaded guilty in September to health care fraud and taking kickbacks in exchange for Medicare referrals.
Kim fled the United States for South Korea in 2015 and was placed on the federal most wanted list, prosecutors said.
Kim was tracked down in Vietnam last February.
Kim, who owned New Hope Clinic in Koreatown, generated fraudulent claims to Medicare for physical therapy not provided to patients, prosecutors said. Kim took about 55 percent of the proceeds in the scam, which led Medicare to pay $690,519 in claims from the defendant’s clinic, prosecutors said.
Kim pocketed $379,785 in proceeds, prosecutors said.
