Authorities searched Vista Monday for suspects of a shooting, but later learned that the juvenile victim had actually accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Deputies received a call at 3:44 p.m. reporting that a juvenile was shot in the leg at a small park in the 100 block of Paseo Marguerita, near North Santa Fe Avenue, according to Sgt. T. Phillips of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg near a pond, and they applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, Phillips said.

Deputies established a perimeter and searched for two suspects, and a nearby school was placed on lockdown, according to Phillips.

“After an extensive search for the suspects with no one matching the description found, the perimeter was eventually broken down and the school lockdown was lifted,” Phillips said.

Detectives later learned that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted and likely an accident.

Deputies are no longer searching the area for a suspect.

The victim was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital in an air ambulance, then taken to UC San Diego’s hospital in Hillcrest, according to Phillips.
