Richard Eugene Stitely, on death row since 1992 for killing a woman in Los Angeles in 1990, has died in San Quentin State Prison, authorities said Friday.

Stitely, 71, was found unresponsive in his single cell Wednesday night and was pronounced dead a short time later, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation..

“There were no signs of trauma,” a CDCR statement said. “His cause of death and COVID-19 status will be determined by the Marin County coroner.”

Stitely was sentenced to death in Los Angeles County on Sept. 14, 1992, for the rape and murder of Carol Unger, 47, the CDCR reported.

On Jan. 19, 1990, Unger was seen leaving the White Oak Bar in Reseda with Stitely, and the next day, her body was found in a parking lot of a North Hollywood industrial complex, the CDCR reported.
