A 50-year-old Gardena man was shot to death during a fight with a store employee, authorities said Monday.

It was reported at 7 p.m. Sunday in the 2300 block of Rosecrans Avenue, according to Gardena police Lt. Christopher Cuff.

The victim, identified as Jerry Lewis, was in the parking lot of a store waiting for a tow truck to repair two flat tires on his vehicle, Cuff said.

“At some point, the victim was involved in a verbal-turned-physical altercation with a store employee. The physical altercation ultimately resulted in a firearm being produced,” he said.

Lewis was shot in the lower part of his body and pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County paramedics, Cuff said.

Anyone with information was asked to call Detective Ryan Sproles at 310-217-9618 or Detective Dolores Searle at 310-217-9654.
