A device used to skim personal information from ATMs was found Tuesday at a Manhattan Beach bank and police warned ATM customers to check their bank accounts.
The Manhattan Beach Police Department was notified of the device at about 12:30 p.m. at the Bank of America branch at 3016 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Officer Christopher Ineguez said.
An ATM service technician made the discovery.
“The service technician stated he was notified that one of the ATMs stopped working at approximately 10 p.m. on Monday,” Inequez said. “Prior to this notification and discovery, the service technician stated the ATMs had been last serviced on Saturday, at which time they were functioning properly.”
Customers who used the ATMs between Saturday and Tuesday were warned to check bank accounts for fraudulent activity and immediately report it to the bank immediately.
Victims were also urged to call Manhattan Beach police at 310-545-4566.
Skimmers are malicious card readers attached to the real payment terminals so that they can harvest data from people who swipe their cards. They can be hard to detect because they don’t prevent the ATMs from working. Thieves often have to return to the ATM to collect the data.
