Seal Beach police Wednesday were investigating a potential hate crime involving teenagers who set off fireworks at a resident’s home.

Police were called at about 8:50 p.m. Monday when a group of teens set off fireworks near the front door of a home near 12th Street and Landing Avenue, Seal Beach Police Sgt. Nick Nicholas said. The resident’s door was damaged, but no one was hurt, Nicholas said.

A group of teens were questioned and released to their parents, Nicholas said.

Police suspect the incident was a potential hate crime, but were still gathering evidence, Nicholas said.

“Regardless of the motivation, this incident is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Police Chief Philip Gonshak said. “I want the community to know that hatred, bias, and intolerance will not be accepted. Our investigator will work to ensure that the juveniles responsible for this crime are held accountable.”

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call detectives at 562-799-4100, ext. 1109, or email jgibson@sealbeachca.gov.
