A convicted sex offender who disabled a monitoring device he was required to wear as part of his parole was at large Friday in the Riverside metropolitan area, with authorities seeking the public’s help locating him.

Vonnie Doyle James, 56, was last seen on Aug. 4 in Riverside, where he was released from the Robert Presley Detention Center after serving half of a sentence for parole violations.

According to Riverside police, James tore off an ankle-mounted GPS tracking device that had been placed on him under the terms of his release from custody.

The defendant is homeless, and investigators are uncertain of where he may have gone.

He was booked into jail on June 3 to serve a four-month term after he was found guilty of failing to register with law enforcement as a convicted sex offender under California Penal Code section 290.

Court records show James has multiple convictions going back to the 1990s, including one for sexual battery.

James is Black, 6-feet-1 and about 215 pounds. He is bald and was recently pictured with a mustache.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Riverside Police Department at 951-354-2007.
