Deputies made two arrests stemming from a robbery in Thousand Palms earlier this week, sheriff’s officials said Saturday.

On Thursday, a robber punched a person before snatching the victim’s chain necklace in front of a business in the 73000 block of Ramon Road, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The next day, authorities looking for the suspect were led to two homes where they served search warrants, one in the 72000 block of La Canada in Thousand Palms and another in the 48000 block of Charlton Peak in Coachella.

During the searches, deputies allegedly found a .45 caliber semi-auto handgun and methamphetamine.

Nicholas Diaz, 19, of Coachella, whom authorities said is a documented criminal street gang member accused of committing the robbery on Ramon Road, was arrested. He was later released after posting $30,000 bail, according to jail records.

Deputies also arrested Francisco Leyva, 38, of Thousand Palms, who was described by sheriff’s officials as a “convicted felon and documented criminal street gang member” with three arrest warrants for domestic violence.

He was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center on suspicion of various crimes, including being a felon in possession of a gun and remained jailed in lieu of $15,000 bail.
