A nearly 90-minute pursuit of a stolen U-Haul moving truck that began in Orange County ended when the vehicle came to rest in a park in Long Beach and the driver and a passenger were taken into custody.
The chase began in Buena Park about 8:30 p.m. with authorities pursuing the vehicle along the San Diego (405) and Garden Grove (22) freeways and city streets in Costa Mesa, Santa Ana and Long Beach. The location where the pursuit began was not disclosed.
At one point the driver turned off the vehicle’s headlights while traveling northbound on the San Diego Freeway, then later stopped briefly on the freeway, near Long Beach Boulevard, then continued driving with a large poster covering the windshield.
The suspect exited the San Diego Freeway near Long Beach Boulevard and traveled north before turning onto Victoria Street and pulling into a gas station, where the truck crashed into a pole before the suspect drove off the property.
The U-Haul then crashed into a parked truck on Long Beach Boulevard, near 47th Street, in Long Beach. The pursuit continued until the truck jumped a curb onto some grass at Scherer Park, located near Long Beach Boulevard and 46th Street.
Officers pulled the driver out of the U-Haul and took a passenger into custody about 9:50 p.m.
The names of the suspects were not immediately available.
