A 61-year-old woman who was fatally struck by a pickup near the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in South El Monte was identified by authorities Friday.

Lamanda Lovin, of Santa Fe Springs, was hit by the truck when she tried to cross a street, according to the coroner and the California Highway Patrol.

About 6:20 p.m. Thursday, officers from the CHP’s East Los Angeles Area Office responded to the area of San Gabriel and Rosemead boulevards and were told by a witness the victim was standing in the center median. As the 2001 GMC truck approached, the pedestrian attempted to cross the street and was struck, the witness told the CHP.

The woman wasn’t breathing when firefighters arrived, and died at the scene, according to Inspector Henry Narvaez of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The driver of the truck, a 28-year-old La Puente man, stopped and stayed until authorities arrived, the CHP reported.
