A 20-year-old man was fatally injured when his off-road motorcycle slammed into the side of an SUV on a Riverside street, authorities said Friday.

Justin Gatewood of Riverside died shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday following the collision at Alamo and Main streets, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Sgt. Ryan Taack said that the victim was riding his dirt bike, which was not registered for use on city streets, in the bicycle lane on Main, following another man, whose identity was not disclosed, also riding an off-road motorcycle.

The pair were going south on Main without headlights when they approached Alamo, where a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek was preparing to turn off of northbound Main to go west on Alamo, Taack said.

The first motorcycle made it through the intersection uneventfully, but about the time Gatewood started to cross, the Subaru turned in front of him, causing the bike to impact the passenger side of the SUV, the sergeant said.

Riverside Fire Department paramedics reached the scene within a few minutes and attempted life-saving measures, but the young man was pronounced dead a short time later, according to Taack.

The Subaru driver, identified only as a 24-year-old Riverside resident, was not injured and was interviewed by police before being released.

Taack said that neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be factors in the collision.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the police department’s Traffic Bureau at 951-826-8720.
