A man authorities said pointed a gun at Riverside County sheriff’s deputies who fatally shot him was publicly identified Tuesday.
Royce Robertson, 33, of Joshua Tree was pronounced dead at the scene of the Monday morning shooting outside Desert Horizons Country Club in the area of Desert Horizons Drive and Highway 111 in Indian Wells, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Sgt. Lionel Murphy said deputies were initially sent to the area of Simon Drive and Highway 111 in La Quinta on a report that a motorist had threatened to kill another driver with a gun.
The suspect — later identified as Robertson — was gone by the time deputies arrived.
Deputies later spotted the suspect’s vehicle and pulled him over about five miles away as he was attempting to enter the country club.
“The vehicle came to a stop and the suspect exited the vehicle. The suspect was in possession of a handgun and pointed it at the deputies. At that time, a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” Murphy said.
Sheriff’s officials said the shooting occurred at around 7:25 a.m. It was unclear when the initial call came in.
Despite first responders’ attempts to save him, Robertson died at the scene.
A handgun was discovered nearby, Murphy said.
Two deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave per the department’s policy, officials said. Their names were not released.
