A 28-year-old man allegedly fled from sheriff’s deputies in a stolen car in San Jacinto, triggering a chase that led into Hemet, where he hit multiple vehicles before coming to a stop and surrendering, authorities said Wednesday.
Alonso Perez of San Jacinto was arrested and booked Tuesday into the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of felony evading, driving under the influence and possession of a stolen vehicle. Bail information was not immediately available.
According to Sgt. Tom Mix of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Perez was spotted by a patrol unit at about 2:40 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Main Street and Mistletoe Avenue, allegedly at the wheel of a sedan that had been reported stolen hours earlier.
Mix said that when deputies signaled Perez to pull over, he floored the car instead, speeding south into Hemet.
“The suspect fled from law enforcement … in a reckless manner, including running stop signs and driving into oncoming traffic,” the sergeant said.
Pursuing deputies backed out of the chase for pubic safety when a sheriff’s helicopter crew began tracking Perez from overhead, according to Mix.
He said the suspect lost control at the intersection of Menlo and Palm avenues, hitting four cars and leaving the sedan inoperable, at which point he gave up.
No injuries were reported, and Perez was booked into jail after receiving a medical clearance.
Information regarding his background was unavailable.
