Huntington Beach police Wednesday were trying to figure out the identity and means of death in the discovery of human remains in the oil fields southwest of Talbert Avenue and Edwards Street.

A resident discovered the decomposing body of what appears to be a man along with some personal effects and called police at 5:37 p.m. Monday, Huntington Beach Police Department Lt. Brian Smith said.

The cause of death is unknown, so it is being treated as suspicious, Smith said. The body still had remnants of clothing and other identifying features.

Anyone who might have information helpful to investigators was encouraged to call the department’s tip line at 714-375-5066.
