A man suspected of killing a 51-year-old Moreno Valley resident during a confrontation in the victim’s house was being held Monday in lieu of $1 million bail.

Jose Luis Hernandez, 20, of Moreno Valley was arrested Saturday night following the alleged attack in the 13800 block of Sylmar Drive, near Cottonwood Avenue.

According to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Carroll, Hernandez got into a dispute with the victim, Mauricio E. Moreno, for unspecified reasons while inside the victim’s single-story home about 11 p.m. Saturday.

Carroll alleged that Hernandez pulled a weapon — the type wasn’t disclosed — and attacked Moreno, prompting witnesses to call 911.

Patrol deputies and paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and found the Moreno gravely wounded. He was taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center, where he died a short time later, the sergeant said.

Hernandez was taken into custody without incident at the house.
