Authorities Wednesday identified a man who was fatally shot by Los Angeles police while he allegedly held a woman at knifepoint in an apartment in the Sawtelle area near West Los Angeles.
The shooting occurred shortly before 6 a.m. Monday in the 3700 block of Barry Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Hermenegildo Gonzalez, 58, of Los Angeles died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. No officers were injured.
Officers went to the location on a report of a burglary suspect in an apartment, the LAPD reported.
“The comments of the call stated the person calling police could hear someone screaming in distress,” police said in a statement. “Officers arrived and went to the apartment where they saw the suspect in the apartment armed with a large kitchen knife. He had an elderly female at knifepoint (and) at that time the officer-involved shooting occurred.”
The woman, whose identity was not released, was not injured, police said. The investigation was continuing.
