Police believe road rage triggered a shootout outside the La Habra Police Department that left the suspect dead and an officer critically wounded.
The events began about 7:05 p.m. Friday in the area of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway and the Orange (57) Freeway, where a female motorist called 911 to report a road rage driver Friday, according to Lt. Jose Rocha of the LHPD.
Police instructed the woman to drive to the station, located at 150 N. Euclid St., and she was followed by the suspect, according to media reports.
In front of the station, an officer exchanged gunfire with the suspect, Rocha said.
“Everyone who was working responded and came to the aid of the officer,” he said.
Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics responded just after 7:10 p.m. to the station, according to a department spokesman.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, Rocha said. The officer was transported to an area trauma center in critical but stable condition.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said.
“The officer is alert and recovering from his injuries,” according to a police statement.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the suspect or the wounded officer.
