A 30-year-old woman who police said is mentally ill and who stabbed her son with a knife is hospitalized Saturday after being shot by a Los Angeles Police officer in South Los Angeles.
Officers responded to a call at 6:52 p.m. Friday regarding a suspect who was threatening to harm her son and had barricaded herself and the boy inside a residence in the 200 block of West 52nd Street between South Broadway and South Main Street, police said.
LAPD’s Mental Evaluation Unit arrived to deescalate the confrontation and convince the suspect to surrender while officers saw through a side window that the suspect was allegedly stabbing her son, authorities said.
The officers entered the residence to rescue the boy and an officer involved -shooting occurred with the suspect being struck by gunfire and taken into custody at approximately 9:28 p.m. A knife was recovered at the scene, police said.
The boy suffered multiple stab wounds and both he and the suspect were taken to a local hospital where they were both reported to be in stable condition, according to the LAPD.
The case is under investigation.
