A 30-year-old man remained under arrest Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder after a shooting in Mecca, authorities said.
Deputies responded to the intersection of Grapefruit Boulevard and Fourth Street at 6:12 p.m. Friday to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced.
The reporting party told deputies a shooting had occurred and provided a description of the involved vehicles.
Deputies searched the area and found evidence of the shooting along with a vehicle that matched the description of one of the vehicles involved near the area of Avenue 66 and Highway 86.
The driver was contacted and identified as a victim in the shooting, but no injuries were reported, the department said.
Investigators later identified Ricardo Zendejas of Mecca as the suspected shooter. Zendejas’ vehicle was located in Sky Valley where deputies conducted a traffic stop and arrested him without incident.
Zendejas was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center and was expected to appear in court on July 29 at the Indio Larson Justice Center.
Anyone with additional information about the case was encouraged to contact deputy Beck at 760-863-8990.
