A man was killed Saturday morning in a high-speed crash into a large center median tree on Seal Beach Boulevard.

The crash occurred just after 1:20 a.m. near Westminster Avenue, according to Lt. Nick Nicholas of the Seal Beach Police Department.

Officers on patrol saw the northbound car approaching Westminster Avenue at a high rate of speed, Nicholas said.

“Seconds later, officers observed the driver lose control of the vehicle as it collided with a large tree in the center median,” he said. “At no time were officers in pursuit of this vehicle,” he added. “No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved.”

Officers immediately tried to render aid to the motorist, who was the sole occupant of the car. Orange County Fire Authority firefighters also responded. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not immediately known if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the crash but the investigation continued, Nicholas said.

Anyone with information about the victim or the crash was asked to contact Traffic Investigator Officer Hector Mercado at 562-799-4100, ext. 1635 or hmercado@sealbeachca.gov.
