A 45-year-old man was found Thursday fatally shot on a South Los Angeles street, where he was subsequently struck by at least two vehicles.

Initially, it was believed the man died from a hit-and-run crash, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison said. The man was then hit by a second vehicle, and that driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

However, it turns out the man died from a gunshot wound before he was hit by the vehicles, Madison said.

The death occurred around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Towne and East Vernon Avenues, Madison said. The man’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

Police have no suspect information and don’t know if the shooting was gang-related, the officer said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact detectives at LAPD’s Central Division at 213-486-6606. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
