A memorial service was held Thursday to honor police service dogs killed in the line of duty.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore was among those on hand for the ceremony in the courtyard LAPD headquarters in downtown Los Angeles.
During the event, a bronze statue was unveiled dedicated in honor of four K-9s that made the ultimate sacrifice.
“These animals and these abilities forge relationships that are an undying trust,” Moore said. “I’ve seen it personally where the relationships between these canines and their handlers is that they rely upon each other that they’re going to go home. Unfortunately, while that works many times, there are instances in which that has not occurred.”
The event included a live demonstration of skills by police dogs and their handlers.
Among those attending the event where K-9s and their handlers from LAPD, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and Pasadena Police Department.
