A senior was struck and killed Thursday by a hit-and-run driver in the rural community of Rainbow, south of Temecula.

The fatality was reported shortly before noon on Rainbow Canyon Road just north of Rainbow Valley Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Mike Lassig said the victim, identified only as a Hispanic man in his late 60s, was walking on the shoulder of the narrow two-lane corridor when he was hit by a “higher-profile vehicle, such as a raised pickup truck, SUV or van.”

The victim was hurled into the brush, where he was discovered by passersby sometime later, according to Lassig. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are seeking the public’s assistance identifying the driver and vehicle involved in the fatality.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP Temecula office at 951-466-4300.
