The Desert Hot Springs Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Friday evening at an undisclosed location.

The checkpoint will be conducted from 6 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location based on data of impaired driving-related crashes.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Police Chief Jim Henson said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

Police said impaired driving also includes marijuana, some prescription medication, and over-the-counter drugs that could interfere with driving. A first-time DUI charge could cost drivers about $13,500 in fines and penalties, and impaired drivers could also have their license suspended.

The department will also have additional officers on patrol who will look for drivers suspected of being under the influence until New Year’s Day. Drivers were urged to be responsible when celebrating the holiday season by not driving under the influence.

“Let’s make this a joyful and safe holiday season for everyone on the road,” Henson said. “This enforcement period allows us to get the message out that it is essential to act responsibly and plan a sober ride home.”
