A convicted felon accused of attacking his 76-year-old mother at her San Jacinto home, inflicting nearly fatal stab wounds, must stand trial for attempted murder and other offenses, a judge ruled Thursday.
Pascual Herrera Carlos, 52, was arrested in 2022 following a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigation into the alleged assault in the 300 block of South Kirby Street, near Cottonwood Avenue.
At the end of a preliminary hearing Thursday at the Banning Justice Center, Superior Court Judge Randolph Rogers found there was sufficient evidence to bound Carlos over for trial on the attempted murder count, as well as sentence-enhancing allegations of using a deadly weapon — a knife — in the commission of a felony and inflicting great bodily injury.
The judge scheduled a post-preliminary hearing arraignment for March 14 and left the defendant’s bail set at $1 million.
Carlos is being held at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Pelato, on the morning of Sept. 28, 2022, the defendant was involved in a unspecified confrontation with his mother, whose name was not disclosed, inside her residence
The encounter culminated in a domestic assault, during which the defendant allegedly grabbed a knife and plunged it into the victim several times, resulting in “severe wounds,” Pelato alleged.
He said that Carlos then fled the residence, after which the woman called 911.
Paramedics and patrol deputies reached the location within minutes and rendered aid to the victim. She was hospitalized and ultimately recovered, according to the sergeant.
Detectives obtained a warrant for the defendant’s arrest, initiating a search that lasted until late November 2022, when authorities in San Diego County located and took Carlos into custody without incident, Pelato said.
He was transferred to Riverside County a few days later.
Carlos has prior felony convictions in another jurisdiction that weren’t listed in court documents.
