The Cathedral City Police Department will conduct a DUI enforcement operation Sunday for St. Patrick’s Day.
Additional officers are set to be on patrol from 6 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday, according to Sgt. Jeffrey Barnett. They’ll be on the lookout for drivers who appear to be driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
“St. Patrick’s Day is a time for celebration, but it’s important to celebrate responsibly,” Police Chief George Crum said in a statement. “Designating a sober driver before festivities begin can save lives. It’s a simple way to make sure everyone traveling on our roads gets home safely.”
Barnett said impaired driving also includes marijuana, some prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs that could interfere with driving. A first-time DUI charge could cost drivers about $13,500 in fines and penalties, and impaired drivers could also have their license suspended.
