A brush fire that may have been sparked by a burning vehicle spread over at least 45 acres amid high heat in the Santa Clarita area Friday, sending one firefighter to a hospital with heat-related issues.
The Plenty Fire was reported around 4 p.m., generally in the area of Copper Hill Drive and Haskell Canyon Road.
Responding crews estimated the blaze at 40 acres, with the potential to spread over 100 acres. But an hour later, crews on the scene reported good progress in slowing the blaze, which was then estimated at about 45 acres.
Crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Angeles National Forest were battling the blaze. About an hour into the effort, one firefighter was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital after complaining of weakness and dizziness due to the heat.
There was no immediate report of any other injuries, and no structures were threatened by the blaze.
