One Year Ago Today (August 4, 2023)…A man and woman posted bond and were released from jail after being arrested for allegedly possessing unregistered guns — including a non-serialized short-barrel AR-15 assault rifle.

Indio residents David Joel Bustos, 24, and Kaztynnee Zamorez, 20, were arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of being in possession of a short-barreled rifle, a machine gun and an unregistered handgun, according to Sgt. Paul Heredia of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. They were later released on $10,000 bail bonds.

Heredia said that Bustos was additionally arrested on suspicion of being a gang member and convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force along with the California Highway Patrol K-9 Team and sheriff’s department’s Aviation unit served a search warrant at 9 a.m. Thursday at a residence in the 45000 block of Bradley Way, according to Heredia.

During the search, a non-serialized short-barreled AR-15 rifle and a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun with a switch capable of converting it to full-automatic capacity were allegedly found, he said.

Bustos and Zamorez were subsequently booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio but were released Friday on $10,000 bail bonds, according to inmate records.

Anyone with more information on the firearms case was asked to call Officer Coddington with the CVVCGTF at 760-836-1600.
