One person was killed and another person was injured in a hit-and-run accident Tuesday in the Westlake area of Los Angeles, and police sought the public’s help to find the motorist.

Officers were sent to the area of Third Street and Virgil Avenue about 5:50 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A woman in her 70s was taken to a hospital, where she died, police said. Her name was not immediately available. A man in his 80s was taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said.

According to the preliminary investigation, the woman was hit by a vehicle driven by the man in his 80s, who stopped to assist her. At that point, another vehicle hit both of them and kept going, police said.

Investigators have not determined if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors, and no description of the hit-and-run vehicle or suspect was available.

“Motorists are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at that scene to identify themselves. Motorcyclists are also reminded to obey the rules of the road and ride at a safe speed,” the LAPD said in a statement.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to contact LAPD West Traffic detectives at 213-473-0234. Calls during non-business hours or weekends should be directed to 877-527-3247. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
