A weekend gun buyback event co-sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn and the Torrance Police Department netted 256 weapons, Hahn’s office said Monday.
Saturday’s event in Torrance was the 13th sponsored by Hahn in her Fourth Supervisorial District since May 2022 — during which a total of 2,052 firearms were bought back, Hahn’s office said in a statement.
The firearms were turned over to the police — anonymously, and no questions asked — in exchange for gift cards of varying amounts, depending on the weapon. The gift cards were purchased by Hahn’s office.
Saturday’s haul netted 89 pistols, 88 rifles, 69 shotguns, two “ghost” guns and eight assault weapons, according to Hahn’s office.
Non-working firearms or parts could be exchanged for $50 gift cards; working pistols, rifles or shotguns were worth $100; “ghost” guns or weapons with no serial numbers were worth $200 gift cards; and assault rifles could be redeemed for $300 cards.
All recovered firearms are later destroyed, Hahn’s office said.
“Today in closets and bedrooms across L.A. County there are 2,000 fewer guns that can be found by a child, accidentally discharged, or stolen and used to kill in a crime,” Hahn said in a statement.
“That makes all of the work we’ve done to bring these buybacks to our residents worth it. I’m thankful to our partners in law enforcement who have made these events possible and the hundreds of people who took us up on our offer and chose to make their homes and communities safer.”
Hahn’s office previously sponsored gun buybacks in Lynwood, North Long Beach, Norwalk, Wilmington, Long Beach, Hawaiian Gardens, Artesia, Bellflower and Pico Rivera.
